Folding Wheelchairs

Those that are wheelchair dependent want as much comfort and convenience out of them as possible. They also want to feel safe and secure when using their chair. Folding wheelchairs try to offer both. They offer the convenience of size reduction with the folding option but tend not to be as strong as standard manual wheelchairs. There are several advantages and disadvantages to folding wheelchairs which will be the focus of this article.

One of the clear advantages of the folding wheelchair is that it folds for car storage. Now those that need wheelchairs have no problem traveling and even driving in an automobile. The chairs fit nicely into the trunk or backseat of most cars. This makes for very easy access to help get where they need going.

Most folding wheelchair today fold without having to remove any parts. This makes the whole process go much faster and the risk of loosing small parts is none.

Folding wheelchairs offer flexibility. They are able to conform to various types of terrain where manual wheelchairs cannot.

Finally, for small homes the foldable wheelchairs are great for storage. They can be put in small closets or compartments.

Some of the disadvantages of the folding wheelchair are the extra parts. Some of these are flimsy and can be quite easily lost.

Those who like to partake in wheelchair sports may be let down by the folding wheelchair. Some are too flimsy for certain activities.

The seats on folding wheelchairs are generally not adjustable and they are also much harder to push than standers manual wheelchairs.

Finally, they are not as sound and are heavier that manual wheelchairs.

The folding wheelchair does offer some convenience but it isn’t for everyone. Before deciding to purchase weigh the advantages and disadvantages carefully. The wrong chair will only cause disappointment and cost more in the long run.
