Pediatric Wheelchairs

Sometimes children need assistance as well as adults. Many times when we imagine a typical wheelchair user an image of a much older person comes to mind. Unfortunately children are sometimes needy of these devices so it is important that pediatric wheelchairs are their to meet the child’s needs.

Pediatric wheelchairs do need to be designed differently then wheelchairs for adults. A very important feature for a pediatric wheelchair is its adjustability. Children will grow and having a wheelchair that will account for this will save on having to replace the chair every year. They should be adjustable for changes in height as well as weight.

A pediatric wheelchair should also be lightweight. This will vary according to age, size and generally strength of the child. However, they are generally not as strong as adults so they need a chair that takes this into account.

Sometimes, pediatric wheelchairs are designed with some color. This may sound silly but young children need stimulation in their lives. A nicely decorated pediatric wheelchair will look nice and possibly not look so much like a piece of machinery.

Parent and children may wish to take a pediatric wheelchair seating course. This will teach both parties how to sit properly for maximum comfort and posture. This will help prevent further injuries and strains on the muscles.

For those that lack space, they may wish to consider a pediatric folding wheelchair. These are quite lightweight and fit into some very tight spots. They make for much easier trips out as they fit in most car trunks. They also can make for easier storage in the home.

Sometimes children need wheelchairs too. When this is the case, a pediatric wheelchair that is adjustable and lightweight is the best option. This will grow with them and be easy for them to use.
