Accessibility Issues
Those that are disabled would like to take a greater part in life in the outside world. However, in many cases the outside world isn’t accessible to them. Many of the disabled have come to accept their disability; however they feel their real problem comes from being isolated. Accessibility issues are key when it comes to the life of the disabled person.
Accessibility issues are also a problem for many organizations and business owners. They would love to make their premises easier for the disabled to access however they fear the monetary costs. The truth be told there are several tings that can be done to a building or area to help the disabled that are not expensive at all.
A huge accessibility issue is the premises itself. To comply with many disability discrimination acts premises needs to have disabled toilets available. There are likely grants available to get this put in place. They also need an accessible entrance to the premises. This can either be a separate flat entrance or a ramp put into place. They also should have hearing loops and clearly printed signs with exit and toilet information.
Another Accessibility issue is information. This can be done quite cheaply and does a world of good. Consider getting information made in large print, audiotape, Braille and other formats. Although these may seem simple they make a huge difference in the lives of a disabled person.
Finally, an organization should consider providing transport. Many disabled people would like to join clubs and groups but getting to them is a real accessibility issue. Transport can be provided for not a huge cost. There may also be funding available. This can open up a whole new range of opportunities for the disabled person and for the organization.
The disabled have made great strides in joining the outside world. By tackling accessibility issues the world can invite them in even more.
